「本日のラッセルの言葉」のなかの「キリスト教の登場とともに，罪を避けるという新しい動機が入ってきて（With Christianity, the new motive of avoidance of sin enters in,）」を読んで、「キリスト教の登場以前にも罪を避けるという気持がなかったなんてことはないはずなので、この記述は間違っている」と思った人はいないでしょうか？ ここはもちろんラッセルが自分の意見としてそう言っているのではなく、あくまでもキリスト教は罪を避けるという動機を"中心的・体系的な形で強調した"という趣旨です。
現代においても、理論上は男女に同じ道徳基準が課されているとされながら、実際には有名人や権力者の“過ち”は比較的寛容に扱われるという点で、ラッセルの指摘がいまだに妥当であるようにも思われます。
「本日のラッセルの言葉」でも、裁判沙汰になっているトランプ大統領の過去の女性遍歴を思い浮かびます。ただし、トランプはもちろん数々の不倫を「金で解決してきたこと」など認めることはありません。
When reading the line from "Today's Words of Russell" - "With Christianity, the new motive of avoidance of sin enters in" - did anyone think, "That can’t be right; surely, even before the advent of Christianity, people had reasons to avoid sin”? Of course, Russell is not expressing this as his personal opinion, but rather pointing out that Christianity emphasized the avoidance of sin as a central and systematic motive.
Even today, although in theory men and women are held to the same moral standards, in practice the "misdeeds" of celebrities or people in power tend to be treated with relative leniency - suggesting that Russell's observation still holds true.
The quote from "Today's Words of Russell" also brings to mind President Trump's long history of relationships with women, which has now led to legal troubles. However, Trump has never admitted to things like "resolving multiple affairs with money."
