多様性は，単一の教義（信条）を全ての人々が受けいれることを排除するという事実にもかかわらず，必須のものである（本質的に重要なものである）。しかしそのような教えを説くことは，特に困難な時代においては難しいことである。しかも，もしかすると，ある種のにがい教訓が悲劇的な経験から学びとられるまで，そのことは実際の効果をもつようになることはできないかも知れない。
Diversity is essential in spite of the fact that it precludes universal acceptance of a single gospel. But to preach such a doctrine is difficult especially in arduous times. And perhaps it cannot be effective until some bitter lessons have been learned by tragic experience.

＜寸言＞
「多様性の確保は重要である」というのは、民主主義的な社会においてはほぼ共通の理念になっています。それは自由主義のリーダーであったアメリカ合衆国において最も普及していた理念です。しかし、残念ながら、トランプが力を持つようになって以後は、多様性よりも、「力は正義である」とか、「強国や強者が世界の富の多くを獲得する権利がある」と考える米国民が増えてきているように思われます。いかがでしょうか？
なお、「a single gospel」を「単一の福音」とか「単一の教義」と訳すと誤解を与えそうです。「gospel」はここでは宗教的な意味合いよりも「信条」という意味合いのほうが強いので、「教義（信条）」と訳しました。また、ラッセルは、一貫して、理性や論理的説得の力を信じつつも、人間の愚かさや非合理に対して深い悲観と懐疑を抱いているため、そういったニュアンスが感じられる日本語訳にしました。
The idea that “the preservation of diversity is important” has become an almost universally shared principle in democratic societies. It was most widely embraced in the United States, which had long served as the leader of liberal democracy. Unfortunately, however, since Donald Trump came to power, it seems that more and more Americans have come to prioritize values such as “might makes right” or the belief that powerful nations and strong individuals have a legitimate right to claim a disproportionate share of the world’s wealth, rather than valuing diversity. What is your view on this?
Incidentally, I believe translating “a single gospel” as “a single teaching” or “a single doctrine” might lead to misunderstandings. In this context, “gospel” carries a broader meaning, closer to “creed” or “ideological belief”, than specifically religious connotations. That is why I translated it as “教義（信条）” (“doctrine [creed]”). Moreover, since Russell consistently believed in the power of reason and rational persuasion, while also harboring deep skepticism and pessimism toward human folly and irrationality, I tried to render those nuances in my Japanese translation.
