The same impulse carried further causes kings to engrave their victories on monuments of stone, poets to relate old sorrows in words whose beauty (they hope) will make them immortal, and philosophers to invent systems providing that time is no more than illusion. ＜寸言＞
社会と個人との関係や在り方を考える時、社会が特定の個人（権力者など）に無理にあわせたり、個人（私など）が社会に無理に合わせたりする必要性も義務もありません。ただし、社会は、多くの人々の幸福や福祉や安全を考えないといけないので、虚無主義に立つわけにはいきません。それに対し、個人は、社会（や他人）に悪影響を与えない限り、もっと自由であってよいはずです。少なくとも、思考においてはいかなる制限を設けなくてよいはずです。
そう考えない人は、本日引用したラッセルの言葉を余り理解できないでしょう。虚無主義的なことをいろいろ述べた後で、「にもかかわらず,永遠(なるもの)を追求する努力は,移りゆく瞬間を価値あらしめるのである（Nonetheless, striving after eternity has ennobled the passing moment..）という発言を理解することも共感を抱くこともできないでしょう。
When considering the relationship between society and the individual, there is neither a necessity nor an obligation for society to forcibly conform to a particular individual (such as those in power), nor for individuals (such as myself) to forcibly conform to society. However, since society must take into account the well-being, welfare, and safety of many people, it cannot adopt a nihilistic stance. In contrast, individuals should be granted greater freedom as long as they do not negatively impact society (or others). At the very least, there should be no restrictions placed on thought.
Those who do not share this perspective will likely struggle to understand the words of Bertrand Russell that I quoted today. After making various nihilistic statements, he said, "Nonetheless, striving after eternity has ennobled the passing moment." Such people would neither comprehend nor resonate with this sentiment.
