恐怖（すなわち恐怖心）こそ、神秘的なものへの恐怖、敗北への恐怖、死に対する恐怖など、あらゆるものの根底にあります。恐怖心は残忍性/冷酷さの親であり、従って、残忍性/冷酷さと宗教が手を取り合っていても不思議ではありません。
Fear is the basis of the whole thing-fear of the mys terious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion go hand-in-hand.

「ラッセル－折々の言葉」（Bertrand Russell Quotes - occasional edition）の今年最初の投稿です。引用した部分は、ラッセルが1927年に一般向けに行った講演の終盤で語られたものです。古今東西、政治家は人間の恐怖心を利用して人々（国民）を操ることに長けており、この点には注意が必要です。昨年、何度政治家に騙されたかを振り返ってみれば、同じ過ちを繰り返すことは少なくなるはずです。しかし、残念ながら、人はすぐに忘れてしまい、過ちを繰り返します。

The passage quoted here comes from the latter part of a public lecture that Russell delivered in 1927. Throughout history and across cultures, politicians have been adept at exploiting human fear to manipulate people (the citizenry), and this is something that calls for caution.
If we look back on how many times we were misled by politicians last year, we should be able to reduce the chances of being misled again. Unfortunately, however, people quickly forget and repeat the same mistakes.
