人間が相互に加える害悪の、そしてそれがはね返ることによって自分自身に加える害悪の、主要な源泉は、思想や信条にあるというよりは、むしろ悪しき情熱（情念）にある、と私は考える。ただし（だが）、害をなす思想や原理は、常にではないが、概して、悪しき情熱の仮面（口実）である。
I think that the evils that men inflict on each other, and by reflection upon themselves, have their main source in evil passions rather than in ideas or beliefs. But ideas and principles that do harm are, as a rule, though not always, cloaks for evil passions.

＜寸言＞
強い先入観や偏見を持っている場合、相手（あるいは相手国など）を理解しようとせず、ちょっとしたことで相手（あるいは相手国など）に悪感情を抱くことがあります。また、ある人が何かを強く主張したり強く信じたりする場合、その多くは、事実や証拠に基づいて論理的に説得できないと本人が考えているからです。なぜなら、論理的に説得可能なことは「信じる」必要がないからです。例えば、宗教を信じる人と信じない人との間での論争は、この傾向の典型例です。
事実や証拠に基づき、論理的に相手を説得できると思っている場合は、相手もいずれ理解する（あるいは理解できなくても容認する）だろうと考えられるため、冷静に対応することができます。「言うは易く、行うは難し」ですが。
If a person holds strong prejudices or biases, they may fail to make an effort to understand others (or other countries) and may easily develop ill feelings toward them over minor matters. Furthermore, when someone asserts or strongly believes something, this is often because they feel that it cannot be logically disproved based on facts or evidence. After all, if something could be logically demonstrated, there would be no need to "believe" it. A typical example of this tendency is the disputes between those who follow a religion and those who do not.
When one believes that, based on facts and evidence, it is possible to persuade another person logically, one can reasonably expect that the other will eventually understand -- or at least tolerate -- even if full understanding is not achieved, and can therefore respond calmly. Easier said than done.
