Unless we have retired and tend to stay at home, we encounter many people in our daily lives. However, if we were to pay attention to everyone in front of us, we would soon be overwhelmed. So unless someone speaks to us or behaves in an unusually noticeable way, we usually don't take any notice. In a crowded supermarket, for example, we refrain from staring at other shoppers and adopt an attitude as if we were not even seeing them, despite the fact that they are within our sight.
This behavior reflects exactly what is expressed in today's quote from Bertrand Russell: "!We do not, as a rule, take a very great interest in the doings of other people unless we either love or hate them. If we do not take an interest in them, we do not take the trouble to get information about them."
More important, however, is what follows. Russell continues: "While if we either love or hate them, the information which we shall obtain is likely to be misinformation. This applies in particular to one nation's knowledge of another nation."
