* 山岸勝榮『単語博士－いちばん知りたい暮らしの英語』(小学館2003年2月)p.11の説明：英語の midnight は午前0時ちょうどのことで,日本語の「真夜中」のように漠然と深夜を指す語ではない。]
→　山岸氏はこのように書きながら,p.12に次のような例文と邦訳を載せている。
*1 Yesterday I came home after midnight. （昨日は「真夜中過ぎに」帰宅した。
*2 The second call came at midnight. (2度目の電話は「真夜中に」かかってきた。)
　２つの用例では, midnight に「真夜中」という訳語をあてており，p.11の説明と矛盾している。山岸氏が「"midnight" は午前0時ちょうどのことで,日本語の「真夜中」のように漠然と深夜を指す語ではない」と断言している以上、「*1は,午前零時過ぎに帰宅（午前様）」「*2は,午前零時(頃)に電話」と訳すべきということになるはずである。
　しかし，（山岸氏の言うように「午前0時」という意味の場合がほとんどであろうが、Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English では、「12 o'clock at night と the middle of the night」の２つを意味としてあげていることからも，日本語の「真夜中」と訳してよい場合もあると思われる。
