知的自由を個人的に重んじる人々は、社会の中では少数派かも知れない。しかし、その中にこそ、将来の世界にとって最重要な人物がいる。私たちは、人類の歴史におけるコペルニクス、ガリレオ、ダーウィンの重要性を目の当たりにしてきた。従って、将来、このような人々がもはや現れないと考えるべきではない。もし、彼らが自分の仕事を妨げられ、その仕事が本来もたらすべき影響を発揮することまで妨げられるならば、人類は停滞し、かつて古代の輝かしい時代の後に暗黒時代が出現したように、新たな暗黒時代がやってくるだろう。
Those to whom intellectual freedom is personally important may be a minority in the community, but among them are the men of most importance to the future. We have seen the importance of Copernicus, Galileo, and Darwin in the history of mankind, and it is not to be supposed that the future will produce no more such men. If they are prevented from doing their work and having their due effect, the human race will stagnate, and a new Dark Age will succeed, as the earlier Dark Age succeeded the brilliant period of antiquity.

今日の民主主義国では、国家や社会によって思想表現の自由が露骨に弾圧されることはほとんどありません。しかし、直接的に弾圧されることはなくても、時の政府や保守勢力によって、学問や思想の自由が間接的に損なわれることは依然として見られます。そのような事例として、どのようなものが思い浮かぶでしょうか？
アメリカでは保守派の圧力による教育現場が制限を受けています。たとえば、一部の州（例：フロリダ、テキサスなど）で、「クリティカル・レース・セオリー（CRT）」やLGBTQ+関連の教育内容が「親の権利」を名目に制限・排除されています。
日本では主なものとして次の３つがすぐに思い浮かびます。
(1) 日本学術会議の任命拒否問題（2020年）： 当時の菅首相が、政府に批判的と見なされる６名の学者の任命を拒否しました。
(2) 大学における軍事研究への誘導と大学の自己規制： 防衛装備庁の研究資金制度（安全保障技術研究推進制度）をめぐって、大学や研究機関が研究の方向性を自ら制限する恐れがあるほか、資金を獲得しやすくするために、政府が望む研究分野に偏りが生じる可能性も指摘されています。
(3) 沖縄・基地問題をめぐる言論圧力： 沖縄の基地問題に関して政府に批判的な報道や研究者が、政治家・保守系メディアから「反日」として攻撃されるケースがあります。
こうした状況に照らすと、「本日のラッセルの言葉」（添付画像参照）は、トランプが 2025 年 3 月から二期目の米大統領を務めている現在も、なお当てはまると感じる人が少なくないでしょう。もちろん、トランプの政策による影響を受けなかった人や、むしろ恩恵を受けた人にとっては、まったく逆に「黄金時代」と映るかもしれません。
Today, in democratic countries, overt state or societal suppression of freedom of thought and expression is rare. Nevertheless, even without direct repression, academic and intellectual freedom can still be undermined indirectly by the government of the day or by conservative forces. What kinds of cases come to mind?
United States. Conservative pressure has placed constraints on education. In a number of states--Florida and Texas, for instance-- lessons on Critical Race Theory (CRT) and LGBTQ-related topics have been restricted or removed under the banner of "parents' rights."
Japan. Three prominent examples readily suggest themselves.
Refusal to appoint members to the Science Council of Japan (2020). Then-Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declined to approve six scholars whom the government regarded as critical of its policies.
Steering universities toward military research and resulting self-censorship. With the Ministry of Defense's Security Technology Research Promotion Program, universities and research institutes may narrow their research agendas on their own initiative, and bias can arise toward fields favored by the government in the hope of securing funding.
Pressure on speech concerning the Okinawa base issue. Journalists and researchers critical of the government's stance on U.S. bases in Okinawa have been attacked as "anti-Japanese" by politicians and conservative media outlets.
In light of these circumstances, Today's Russell Quotation (see attached image) still strikes many observers as pertinent, even now that Donald Trump has been serving his second term as U.S. president since March 2025. Of course, those untouched by his policies--or who have profited from them-- may see the present moment as a personal "golden age" instead.
