Diversity is essential in spite of the fact that it precludes universal acceptance of a single gospel. But to preach such a doctrine is difficult especially in arduous times. And perhaps it cannot be effective until some bitter lessons have been learned by tragic experience.

* a brief comment:
The way people perceive the concept of "diversity" seems to be deeply influenced by the role religion plays in their society. For example, there appear to be significant differences in attitudes toward the value of diversity between countries where monotheistic religions such as Christianity have a strong influence (e.g., the United States and Israel) and countries where Buddhism or polytheistic traditions are deeply rooted (e.g., Thailand and Japan). The fact that President Trump and his supporters in the United States place little emphasis on diversity may be partly explained by these differences in religious values.
In particular, President Trump -- now serving his second term as of 2025 -- draws his strongest support from the so-called Rust Belt, the industrial region of the American Midwest and the Great Lakes. Having experienced decades of industrial decline and economic stagnation, many residents there criticize the ideals of "diversity" and "equality" championed by Democratic supporters as "unrealistic idealism that ignores reality." While Trump's trade policies and manufacturing revival efforts have sparked both support and opposition, for the people of the Rust Belt, they carry symbolic significance: a sense that their voices are finally being heard in national politics.
Yet even if their grievances and frustrations are understandable, diversity remains an indispensable value in modern society. Given the depth of division in the United States, it seems all too possible, as Russell observed, that "perhaps it cannot be effective until some bitter lessons have been learned by tragic experience."
