Bertrand Russell Quotes

To be out of harmony with one's surroundings is, of course, a misfortune, but it is not always a misfortune to be avoided at all costs. Where the environment is stupid or prejudiced or cruel, it is a sign of merit to be out of harmony with it. And to some degree these characteristics exist in almost every environment.

* a brief comment:
There are many aspects to the environment that surrounds us -- not only the natural environment, but also the country and era in which we live, as well as our family and social environments. It is rare for all these aspects to suit a person perfectly; usually, at least one of them does not fit well with whom we are.
People who are generally well-off or privileged in terms of their environment tend to exaggerate even minor inconveniences. Conversely, they are often indifferent to, or lack compassion for, the difficult circumstances faced by others.
When we are young, we often suffer from being out of harmony with our environment. However, as we acquire knowledge and skills and come to have a sufficient income or assets to live without hardship, we gradually gain confidence, and the suffering caused by environmental discord tends to lessen over time.
In The Conquest of Happiness, Bertrand Russell writes, "Where the environment is stupid or prejudiced or cruel, it is a sign of merit to be out of harmony with it." These words offer great encouragement to those who are struggling because they cannot find harmony with the world around them.
And, importantly, one must remember that they are not alone in their suffering. Finding others who share similar struggles can be a vital source of strength and support.
