Most people eat their meals and then think about other things until the next meal. Those, on the other hand, who, having adopted an ascetic philosophy, have deprived themselves of all but the minimum of food, become obsessed by visions of banquets and dreams of demons bearing luscious fruits.

* a brief comment:
Learning how to deal with one's own desires is not easy. But it's something we must learn to do well. If one resolves to live a sincere life and tries to suppress their desires as much as possible, they may end up, as today's quote from Russell suggests, "obsessed by visions of banquets and dreams of demons bearing luscious fruits," like those "who, having adopted an ascetic philosophy, have deprived themselves of all but the minimum of food."
Although Russell is speaking here of the desire for delicious food, doesn't the same principle apply to many other kinds of desire as well?
Since our lives are finite, those who set high goals and harbor great desires often find that they can fulfill only a portion of them. Even so, if we can satisfy our desires little by little, we may at least avoid being unhappy.
Today, once again, I find myself unable to come up with anything particularly remarkable, but I should at least try not to let it turn into frustration. And now, back to our usual topic.
