A curious difficulty, however, still remained. My wife and I got 
A priority, but our son Conrad only got a B, as he had as yet no 
legislation function. Naturally enough we wished Conrad, who was seven 
years old, and his mother to travel together, but this required that 
she should consent to be classified as a B. No case had so far occurred
 of a person accepting a lower classification than that to which they 
were entitled, and all the officials were so puzzled that it took them 
some months to understand.

　ローマ帝国の崩壊後、西洋は長い間、競争による無秩序な支配に委ねられた
（→　対立が支配する無秩序な状態にあった）。それは、以前の世紀に結束が
支配的であったのと同じほど支配的になった。イングランド、フランス、スペ
イン、イタリアは、小王国に分裂した。結束が再び優勢となり始めたのは、徐
々に、そして多くの挫折を経てのことだった。。カール大帝の帝国は長続きせ
ず、神聖ローマ皇帝やフランス王たちは、名目上の封臣たちに対してほとんど
権威を持たなかった。神聖ローマ皇帝が実効的な権威を得ることはなかったが
、フランス王は最終的にはより成功を収めた。スペインは、フェルディナンド

After the fall of Rome, the West was for a long time given over to the
 anarchic rule of rivalry, which became as dominant as cohesion had 
been in earlier centuries. England, France, Spain, and Italy, were 
split into a number of petty kingdoms. It was only gradually and with
 many set-backs that cohesion again began to get the upper hand. 
The Empire of Charlemagne did not last. Holy Roman Emperors and French
 Kings had little authority over their nominal vassals. The Holy Roman
 Emperors never acquired effective authority, but the French Kings 
were at last more successful. Spain was unified by the union of Aragon
 and Castile under Ferdinand and Isabella, and by the expulsion of the
 Moors. England, meanwhile, had emerged from the disunion of early 
Saxon times, and became united with Scotland by a stroke of dynastic
 good fortune. The age of discovery led to the creation of several new
 empires, all of them larger than the Roman Empire. But these new 
empires had not the stability of Rome. First France, then England, and
 then Spain lost most of the territory they had acquired in the Western
 hemisphere.

　今年もあとわずかとなりました。今年もおかげさまでこのメルマガも順調に配信
できました。いつまで続けられるかわかりませんが、しばらくの間は大丈夫そうで
す。
　最近、自分の年齢に近い有名人がけっこう亡くなっています。しかし、経歴を見
ると過去に何らかの病を患ったことにある人がほとんどです。幸い私は病気で苦し
んだ記憶がほとんどないですが、人生、一瞬先は闇ですので、無理はしないことに
しています。
　それでは、皆様、よい年末年始をお過ごしください。　松下彰良

Editor's Postscript
The newsletter will be suspended during the year-end and New Year holidays
 (Dec. 27 ? Jan. 4, 2026).

The year is almost over. Thanks to all of you, this newsletter has been 
delivered smoothly again this year. I do not know how long I will be able 
to continue, but for the time being, it looks as though I can carry on 
without any problems.

Recently, quite a few well-known people around my own age have passed away.
Looking at their backgrounds, however, most of them seem to have suffered 
from some kind of illness in the past. Fortunately, I have little memory of
 having been seriously ill myself, but since life is unpredictable and no 
one knows what tomorrow may bring, I make it a point not to overexert myself.

I wish you all a pleasant and restful year-end and New Year holiday.　A. M.
