＜寸言＞
現代は常に刺激に満ちており、現代人は何か興味深いことがないかと、常に
刺激を求めています。特に若い世代は、刺激を求め続けることが幸せだと考え
る傾向が強いようです。
しかし、そうした生活には、いろいろな知識や経験を得るという肯定的な面
がある一方で、他人が持っているものが自分よりも遥かに良いと思い込むこと
によって、しばしば不幸な気持ちになりがちだという否定的な面もあります。
若い人の多くは「退屈を恐れ」、一日中スマホの画面を眺めたり、ワイヤレ
ス・イヤホンで一日中音楽を聴いたりしていることがよくあります。若い人は
、そうした生活によって自分の大切な時間を浪費していることに気付いていな
いことが多いようです。歳をとって初めて、「残された時間が少ない！ 時間
を大切に使おう！」と気づくようになるしかないのでしょうか？
ラッセルの『幸福論』に載っている以下の言葉をよく考え、若い頃から時々
自分の人生を振り返ることが大切だと思います。
「実りをもたらす退屈から逃げることで、別の、より悪い種類の退屈の餌食
になってしまう。幸福な人生は、かなりの程度まで静かなものでなければなら
ない。なぜなら、真の喜びは静かな雰囲気の中でこそ生きることができるから
である。（ラッセル『幸福論』から）
Modern life is constantly filled with stimuli, and modern people are
always seeking something interesting. Especially for the younger
generation, there seems to be a strong tendency to believe that
continuous stimulation is the key to happiness.
However, while such a lifestyle has the positive aspect of gaining
various knowledge and experiences, there is also the negative side,
where one often feels unhappy by believing that what others have is far
better than what they themselves possess.
Many young people "fear boredom," spending entire days staring at their
smartphone screens or listening to music through wireless earphones.
They often do not realize that they are wasting their precious time
through such activities. Is it only as they grow older that they come
to realize, "There is less time left! I must make better use of my
time!"?
I believe it is important to reflect on one's life from a young age,
taking the following words from Bertrand Russell's The Conquest of
Happiness into careful consideration:

quiet life, for it is only in an atmosphere of quiet that true joy can

編集後記 古いパソコンの活用

今使っている HP（Hewlett-Packard）のデスクトップPCは比較的新しいため、
それほど不満はありません。しかし、中古で購入したノートブックPC２台につい
ては OS が古く（Windows 10 と Windows 8.1）、Windows 10 のサポート終了に
あわせて対応が必要でした。Windows 10 の方は Windows 11 に更新したので、
しばらくの間使用できそうです。
一方、Windows 8.1 の方はハードウェア的に Windows 11 へアップグレードで
きないため、ChromeOS Flex に変更しました。Windows のソフトは使えなくなり
ましたが、Webブラウジングや YouTube の視聴には支障がないため、サブ的に使
っていこうと考えています。
それにしても、HP 製の PC はインターフェースが HDMI ポート1つだけであり、
また、この機種はデュアルディスプレイ環境にも対応していないため、その点は
残念です。現役で働いていた時ならすぐに買い替えたでしょうが、年金生活の今
はそういうわけにはいきません。臨時収入があったら中古の高性能機か、あるい
は新品の安価なものを購入したいと願っていますが、いつになることやら、とい
うところです。 松下彰良
The desktop PC from HP (Hewlett-Packard) that I am currently using is
relatively new, so I have no major complaints about it. However, the two
notebook PCs I bought secondhand were running older operating systems
(Windows 10 and Windows 8.1), and with the end of support for Windows 10
approaching, I needed to take some action. The one with Windows 10 has
been upgraded to Windows 11, so it should remain usable for the time being.
On the other hand, the one running Windows 8.1 cannot be upgraded to
Windows 11 due to hardware limitations, so I switched it to ChromeOS Flex.
Although it can no longer run Windows software, it has no trouble with web
browsing or watching YouTube, so I intend to use it as a secondary machine.
Even so, the HP desktop has only one HDMI port for its interface, and it
also does not support a dual-display setup, which is unfortunate. If I were
still working, I would have replaced it immediately, but now that I am
living on a pension, that is not an option. If I receive some unexpected
income, I would like to buy a high-performance used machine or a reasonably
priced new one -- but who knows when that opportunity will come.
