「子どもに不快な真実を知らせない慣習」
子どもはごまかしを嫌うが、その感情は通常、後年には（歳をとれば）消滅
する。子どもに不快な真実を知らせない慣習は、決して大人たちが考えるよう
に、子どものために採用されるのではない。それは、大人自身が卒直さを苦痛
に感じるがゆえに採用されるのである。
They (= Children) have a dislike of humbug, which usually disappears
in later life. The habit of screening them from the knowledge of
disagreeable truths is not adopted for their sakes although adults may
think it is; it is adopted because adults themselves find candour
painful.

＜寸言＞
現実を教えることによって子どもに不必要な恐怖や不安を抱かせたくないと
いう親心は理解できます。しかし、子どもから質問されたことに対して、子供
に現実を知らせたくないために曖昧に答えるのではなく、子どもの成長にあわ
せ、できるだけ子どもが理解できる仕方で答えてあげたほうがよい、とラッセ
ルはアドバイスしています。これは、子どもが恐怖や不安を感じる前に、現実
を少しずつ理解する手助けをしてあげるためです。さらに、ラッセルは、子ど
もに不快な現実を知らせない慣習は、大人自身が率直さを苦痛に感じるがゆえ
に採用される場合が少なくないと指摘します。
たとえば、『幸福論』（The Conquest of Happiness, 1930）の中で、ラッ
セルは次のように述べています。
「恐怖（心）はどのようなものであれ、直視しないことによってよりひどい
ものになっていく。考えをよそへそらそうと努力すれば、目をそむけようとし
ている幽霊の恐ろしさが一段と増してくる。あらゆる種類の恐怖に対処する正
しい道は、理性的かつ平静に、しかし極力集中的に、その恐怖がすっかり身近
なものになるまで考えることである。ついには、なじんでしまうことにより恐
ろしさが薄らいでくる。（そうして）その事柄がまったく退屈なものとなり、
考えがそこからそれていく。それも、以前のように、意志的に努力したからで
はなく、ただ、そういう題目に興味がなくなったからである。」
（Every kind of fears grows worse by not being looked at. The effort
of turning away one's thoughts is a tribute to the horribleness of the
spectre from which one is averting one's gaze; the proper course with
every kind of fear is to think about it rationally and calmly, but
with great concentration, until it has become completely familiar.
In the end familiarity will blunt its terrors; the whole subject will
become boring, and our thoughts will turn away from it, not, as
formerly, by an effort of will, but through mere lack of interest in
the topic.

編集後記 自民党の断末魔
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
高市早苗（自民党総裁）は、「総理になることができれば、麻生氏に実質的な
人事権を全て渡す」と約束していたと、多くの報道機関が伝えています。麻生氏
は影の自民党総裁と言われていますが、今回の自民党新執行部の人選において、
結果として、自爆行為をしてしまったようです。
具体的には、自民党五役のうち、麻生派が３人（副総裁は麻生、幹事長は義弟
の鈴木俊一、総務会長は有村治子）であり、残りの二人は政調会長に小林鷹之、
選挙対策委員長に古屋圭司（高市氏と政治的立場が近い保守派）という布陣です。
すべて麻生氏が影響力を行使できる人物ばかりです。さらに幹事長代行に萩生田
（旧安倍派）を選んだ点も注目すべき点です。
まるで、今は亡き安倍晋三と麻生太郎が二人で相談して人事を決めたかのよう
であり、古い自民党を象徴する人物で固められています。とても国民の賛同が得
られるとは思えませんが、みなさんはどんな印象を持たれているでしょうか？
さらに驚くべきことに、自民党との連立を組んできた公明党が、ついにその連
立解消を発表しました。これまで自民党の金権体質を黙認してきた公明党は、そ
の結果として評判を落とし、党勢は衰えを見せています。これでは自民党と共倒
れだとようやく危機感をいだくようになったのでしょうか？
このような状況では、高市早苗が総理になれるかは不確実であり、仮に総理に
就任しても長続きしない可能性が大です。後任の総理候補がいないために、ダラ
ダラと総理の座に留まることも考えられますが、レームダック状態になることは
明らかだと思われます。 松下彰良
Sanae Takaichi (President of the Liberal Democratic Party) is reported by
many media outlets to have promised, "If I become Prime Minister, I will
hand over all effective personnel authority to Aso." Aso, often called
the "shadow leader" of the LDP, seems to have committed political suicide
in the selection of the new party leadership.
Specifically, three out of the five key leadership positions in the LDP
are held by members of the Aso faction (Aso as Vice President, Shunichi
Suzuki, Aso's brother-in-law, as Secretary-General, and Haruko Arimura
as Chairperson of the General Council). The remaining two positions are
filled by Takayuki Kobayashi as Policy Research Council Chairman and
Keiji Furuya as Election Strategy Chairman?both of whom are conservatives
with political views aligned with Takaichi. All of these people are
individuals on whom Aso can exert influence. Furthermore, the appointment
of former Abe faction member Koichii Hagyuda as Acting Secretary-General
is another noteworthy point.
It's as though the late Shinzo Abe and Taro Aso secretly consulted and
decided on the personnel choices together, creating a leadership made up
of figures who embody the old LDP. It is hard to believe that this would
gain the support of the public, but what do you think?
In an even more surprising development, the Komeito Party, which has been
in coalition with the LDP, has announced that it will dissolve the
alliance. Komeito, which has long turned a blind eye to the LDP's money-
driven politics, has seen its reputation decline as a result, and its
political strength has been weakening. Has it finally realized that it
risks sinking together with the LDP?
In this situation, whether Takaichi can become Prime Minister is
uncertain, and even if she does, it is highly likely that her tenure will
not be long. Without a successor in sight, it is possible that she may
remain in office for an extended period, but it seems clear that she would
eventually become a lame duck.
