　問題の核心に迫らせるものがもうひとつある。倫理学に客観性を持たせよう
とするならば、AがBに「あなたはXをすべきだ」と言うときに、Aが誰であるか
に依存しないような「すべき」の意味を見つけたいと我々は望む。このことは
、直ちに多くの道徳規範を除外する。もしAが神学的に正統なアステカ人であ
るなら、彼が命じる行為Xは、人身御供(ひとみごくう)となった人間を殺して
食べることかもしれない。MとNという2つの国家が交戦状態にあり、AがM国家
の一員である場合、彼が称賛する行為Xは、できるだけ多くのN国家のメンバー
を殺すことであるかもしれない。一方、AがN国の一員であれば、彼が死を規定
するのはM国の市民であるだろう。もしあなたが中世のカトリック教徒であれ

に客観性を持たせるにはどうすればいいのだろうか。	
There is another which takes us further into the heart of the matter.
If ethics is to have any objectivity, we want to find a meaning of 
"ought" such that, when A says to B, "you ought to do X", this does
 not depend upon who A is. This at once rules out a great many moral
 codes. If A is a theologically orthodox Aztec, the act X, which he 
ordains, may be that of killing and eating a human victim. If two 
nations, M and N, are at war with each other, and A is a member of
 nation M, the act X, which he commends, may be that of killing as
 many members of nation N as possible; while if A is a member of 
nation N, it will be citizens of nation M whose death he will 
prescribe. If you are a mediaeval Catholic, you will hold that it is
 wicked to kill by abortion a foetus in the womb of a heretic woman,
 but that it is virtuous to let the foetus be born and nourished until
 it becomes old enough to deserve death at the stake. If you are a 
modern Free-thinker, you will not agree with this opinion. How, then,
 are we to arrive at objectivity in our definition of "ought"?

　「個人の集合としての国家社会」

　賢明な人類とは、政治においても他のあらゆる分野と同様に、たとえ最大の
集団であってもそれは個人の集合にすぎず、個人は幸福にも不幸にもなり得る
こと、そして世界中のあらゆる苦しんでいる個人は、人間の知恵の欠如や人間
としての思いやりの欠如を示していることを忘れないことからしか生まれない。
政治の目標は抽象的であってはならず、親が幼い子どもに抱く愛情のように具
体的であるべきである。

A wise humanity, in politics as elsewhere, comes only of remembering
 that even the largest groups are composed of individuals, that 
individuals can be happy or sad, and that every individual in the world
 who is suffering represents a failure of human wisdom and of common
humanity. The aims of statesmanship should not be abstract. They should
 be as concrete as the affection of parents for young children.

　＜寸言＞
　最大の人口の中国も、最強集団のアメリカも、狭い国土に１億以上が住んで
いる日本も、個人の集合で成り立っています。個人を中心に考えずに、国家の
視点でばかり物を考える習慣が根付くと、個人の不幸が見逃されがちになりま
す。政治家は、本来ならば国民の幸福を第一に考えるべきですが、国家の繁栄
と国民の幸福を同一視すると、いつの間にか国民の思いとは離れていってしま
います。それは、たとえば、石破総理が自民党の新人議員に当選祝いに10万円
ずつ配ったことにも現れています。自民党の党費と言えども国民の税金が多く
含まれており、庶民感覚とはかなりのズレがあります。
　なお、本日のラッセルの言葉」のなかの「a failure of human wisdom and 
of common humanity」は字句通り訳すと「人間の知恵や共通の人間性の欠如」
ということになりますが、「共通の人間性の欠如」ではわかりにくいので「人
間としての思いやりの欠如」と訳しました。

Even China, the country with the largest population, the United States,
 the most powerful nation, and Japan, where over 100 million people
 live on a small landmass, are all composed of individuals.


When a habit of thinking solely from the perspective of the state
 becomes deeply rooted, without placing the individual at the center,
 the suffering of individuals tends to be overlooked.
Politicians ought to prioritize the well-being of the people, but when
 national prosperity is equated with the happiness of the citizens, 
political thinking can gradually drift away from the actual sentiments
 of the public.
This is evident, for example, in Prime Minister Ishiba’s decision to
 hand out 100,000 yen to each newly elected member of the LDP as a 
congratulatory gift.
Even if the money came from party funds, a large portion originates 
from taxpayers, and the act reveals a significant disconnect from the
 sensibilities of ordinary people.
Incidentally, in today's quote from Russell, the phrase "a failure of
 human wisdom and of common humanity" could literally be translated a
 "a failure of human wisdom and of shared human nature," but since the
 latter is hard to grasp in Japanese, I translated it as "a failure of
 human compassion."

　歳をとるにつれて、日々の作業量を減らしていったほうが健康によさそうで
す。問題は何を減らすかです。「ラッセルの言葉366」については、可能な限り
毎日、投稿していきたいと思っています。
　そこで、「ラッセルの英語」のほうを、つまり「ラッセル英単語熟語」と
「ラッセルの英文」のほうを、週３回（つまり、月・水・金）に減らすことに
します。これでどれだけ楽になるかわかりませんが、明日から実行したいと思
います。引き続きご愛顧よろしくお願いいたします。　（松下）

As I grow older, it seems better for my health to reduce my daily 
workload. The question is what to cut back on. Regarding "366 Days with
 Russell's Words", I would like to continue posting daily as much as 
possible.

Therefore, I've decided to reduce the frequency of "Russell's English",
 that is, "Russell's English Vocabulary & Phrases" and "Russell's English
 Sentences", to three times a week, specifically, on Mondays, Wednesdays,
 and Fridays. I'm not sure how much easier this will make things, but I 
plan to start implementing it tomorrow.
