　理論哲学は、自由主義的なものの見方が妥当であるとかそうでないとかに関
連して、何を語るであろうか？（to say ... of the Liberal outlook）

　自由主義的な物の見方の真髄は、どのような意見が抱かれるか(持たれるか)
ではなく,いかにそれらの意見が抱かれるか、ということにある。（即ち）意
見は独断的に抱かれるのではなく、暫定的に抱かれるのであり、しかも、（自
分の意見に反する）新しい証拠が出てくれば、いつでもそれらの意見を捨てる
可能性があるという意識を伴っている。これは科学における意見の持ち方であ
り、神学における意見の持ち方とは対照的である。ニカイア公会議の決定は
（神学に関しては）いまなお権威をもっているが、科学においては四世紀当時
の意見はもはやいかなる重みも持たない。ソ連においては、弁証法的唯物論に
関するマルクスの公式見解はほとんど疑問にされず、小麦の最良品種を手にい
れる方法についての発生学者の見解を決定するのに役立っているほどである。
ただし、ソ連以外では実験こそがそのような問題を研究する正しい方法である
と考えられている。 科学は、経験的であり暫定的であり非独断的である。 不
変の教条は全て非科学的である。従って、科学的な物の見方は、実践的領域に
おける自由主義的な物の見方であるものの、(相補う)知的対応物である。

What has theoretical philosophy to say that is relevant to the 
validity or otherwise of the Liberal outlook?

The essence of the Liberal outlook lies not in what opinions are held,
 but in how they are held: instead of being held dogmatically, they
 are held tentatively, and with a consciousness that new evidence may
 at any moment lead to their abandonment. This is the way in which 
opinions are held in science, as opposed to the way in which they are
 held in theology. The decisions of the Council of Nicaea are still
 authoritative, but in science fourth-century opinions no longer carry
 any weight. In the U.S.S.R. the dicta of Marx on dialectical 
materialism are so unquestioned that they help to determine the views
 of geneticists on how to obtain the best breed of wheat*1,’though
elsewhere it is thought that experiment is the right way to study such
 problems. Science is empirical, tentative, and undogmatic; all 
immutable dogma is unscientific. The scientific outlook, accordingly,
 is the intellectual counterpart of what is, in the practical sphere,
 the outlook of Liberalism.

　「"良心"に頼る倫理の頼りなさ」

これらの結果の中で最も顕著な逆説的理由は、ある人の良心を他の人の良心よ
り優先させる倫理的理由が存在し得ないということである。もちろん、倫理的
でない理由はあり得る。もし私が乞食なら、怠惰を奨励するのは邪道だとする
良心よりも、慈善を勧める良心を好むだろうし、もし私が政治家なら、あらゆ
る問題を原則の問題としてとらえる相手よりも、妥協することを良心が認める
相手を好むだろう。しかし、私が好むタイプの人間がより優れた人間であると
は言えない。というのは、（この理論によれば）良心に従う人は皆、道徳的に
完璧だからである。

The most glaringly paradoxical of these consequences is that there can
be no ethical reason for preferring one man’s conscience to another's.
There can of course be non-ethical reasons: if I am a beggar, I shall
 prefer a conscience that enjoins charity to one that holds it wicked
 to encourage idleness, and if I am a statesman I shall prefer an
 opponent whose conscience approves of compromise to one who views 
every question as a matter of principle.

＜寸言＞
　人は、良心と悪魔との戦いはあっても、「良心と良心との戦い」という発想
をあまり持たないようです。google で検索してもひっかかりません。
「conscience vs consciou」はよくひっかかっても、「(my) conscience vs
 (your) conscience」で検索しても何もひっかかりません。
　人間は、ひねくれていなければ「良心」というものがある（「良心」と「良
心」がぶつかることはない）という前提でものを考えている人がほとんどのよ
うです。困ったものです。

 編集後記　プリンタが使えない！

　先日、エプソンのプリンタが故障してしまい、年賀状の作成もできなくなる
可能性があり、慌てています。

　最近は、ディジタル化が進み、プリンタを長い間使用してこなかったことが
影響したようです。時々でも使っていれば、プリンタのインクが目詰まりする
ようなことも、ホコリによって給紙ローラーに不具合が起こることもないはず
です。

　しかし、悪い条件（インクの目詰まり、給紙ローラの不調、その他）が重な
り、復旧に数日間、シクハックしています。プリンタの修理に出せばもちろん
直るはずですが、年賀状の作成に間に合わないでしょうし、費用もかなりかか
ると思われます。修理代が高いのであれば、安いプリンタを買ったほうがまし
ということになるかも知れません。いずれにしてもピンチです。
