　十八世紀末まで、精神異常（狂気）は悪魔に取り憑かれるため（悪魔の憑依
のせい）だという理論があった。患者を苦しめるあらゆる苦痛は、悪魔をもま
た苦しめるので、最良の治療法は、悪魔が病人に取り憑くのをやめる決意する
ほど患者に苦痛を与えることだ、と推論された。精神異常者は、この理論に従
って、残酷なぐらいに殴られた。 この治療法は、国王ジョージ三世が精神異
常になった時（気が狂った時）に試みられたが、成功しなかった。医療上の愚
行の長い歴史を通じて信じられてきた、ほとんど全てのまったく無益な治療法
が精神異常の患者に対して激しい苦痛をひきおこすようなものであったという
ことは、奇妙（curious）かつ痛々しい事実である。麻酔剤（麻酔薬）が発見
された時、信心深い人々は、それを神の意志から逃れようとする試みだと考え
た。けれども、神がアダムの肋骨（あばらぼね）をひきぬいた時、神はアダム
を深い眠りにおいたということ（事実）が指摘された。このことは、麻酔剤が
男達にとってはさしつかえないということの証明となった。けれども、女達は
イヴののろいのせいで苦しまなければならない（とされた）。西欧（欧米）で
は婦人参政権がこの教義がまちがいであることを証明したが、日本では今日ま
で、出産時の女性が麻酔剤によって出産の苦痛を軽減することをまったく認め
られていない。日本人は創世記を信じていないので、このサディズム的行為
（this piece of sadism）にはなにか他に正当化の理由があるにちがいない。

Outline of Intellectual Rubbish (1943), n.24

There was, until the end of the eighteenth century, a theory that 
insanity is due to possession by devils. It was inferred that any pain
 suffered by the patient is also suffered by the devils, so that the
 best cure is to make the patient suffer so much that the devils will
 decide to abandon him. The insane, in accordance with this theory,
were savagely beaten. This treatment was tried on King George III when
he was mad, but without success. It is a curious and painful fact that
almost all the completely futile treatments that have been believed in
 during the long history of medical folly have been such as caused 
acute suffering to the patient. When anaesthetics were discovered, 
pious people considered them an attempt to evade the will of God. 
It was pointed out, however, that when God extracted Adam's rib He put
him into a deep sleep. This proved that anaesthetics are all right for
 men; women, however, ought to suffer, because of the curse of Eve. 
In the West votes for women proved this doctrine mistaken, but in 
Japan, to this day, women in childbirth are not allowed any alleviation
 through anaesthetics. As the Japanese do not believe in Genesis, this
 piece of sadism must have some other justification.

　「分析哲学の長所」

相容れない狂信（反対意見への極端な不寛容）が渦巻く中、数少ない統一力の
ひとつが科学的真実性であり、その意味するところは、我々の信念を、人間に
とって可能な限り客観的（非個人的）かつ局所的・気質的な偏りを排除した観
察と推論に基づかせる習慣のことである。この美徳を哲学に導入することを主
張し、それを実りあるものにするための強力な方法を発明したことが、私が属
する哲学学派（注：分析哲学）の最大の長所である。

In the welter of conflicting fanaticisms, one of the few unifying 
forces is scientific truthfulness, by which I mean the habit of basing
 our beliefs upon observations and inferences as impersonal, and as
 much divested of local and temperamental bias, as is possible for
 human beings. To have insisted upon the introduction of this virtue
 into philosophy, and to have invented a powerful method by which it 
can be rendered fruitful, are the chief merits of the philosophical 
school of which I am a member.

＜寸言＞
　ラッセル『西洋哲学史』の最後のページの最後の段落の一節です。

　英米では哲学と言えば分析哲学のことを指すといってよいだろうと思われま
すが、それ以外（ヨーロッパ大陸やアジアなど）ではそうなっていません。茶
道の家元の流派のように、様々な哲学流派があり、それぞれが一国一城の主と
して、内政不干渉を原則としているかのようです。
　フレーゲとラッセル（とムーア）は分析哲学の祖とされており、その後大き
く発展した分析哲学は、考え方の違いによりいくつかのグループに分かれるに
しても、論理分析の方法を採用する点では、一致しています。
　ラッセルは、1914年出版の『外界の知識』において、新しい哲学(分析哲学)
の役割について次のように述べています。

「そうして、哲学が、近い将来において哲学者がいままでになしとげてきたす
べてのことを凌駕するような業績を出すのに必要なただ一つの条件は、 科学
の訓練を身につけながら、過去の伝統にとらわれず、 また古代人の書き残し
たものを、その業績(merits)を除いてはことごとく書き写すような人達の文学
的方法によって毒されていない、哲学的関心をもった人達の学派を創設するこ
とにある、というのが私の信念である。」
（The one and only condition, I believe, which is necessary in order 
to secure for philosophy in the near future an achievement surpassing
 all that has hitherto been accomplished by philosophers, is the 
creation of a school of men with scientific training and philosophical
 interests, unhampered by the traditions of the past, and not misled 
by the literary methods of those who copy the ancients in all except
 their merits.）

　編集後記　テレビ離れ？ －朝ドラ「舞い上がれ」、昨日終了
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

　NHKの朝ドラ「舞い上がれ」が昨日終了しました。

　NHKの朝ドラはここのところずっと（昔に比べ）「低視聴率」に苦しんで
います。朝ドラ最盛期には40%の視聴率を稼ぐこともありましたので、それ
に比べれば「低視聴率」ということになります。ネット利用者が増えるとと
もにテレビ離れが進んでいるせいだと思われます。必ずしも内容がよくない
わけではないと思っています。朝ドラの主人公、特にヒロインは魅力的な人
物が多く、毎日視聴することによって、（健康に良い）「規則正しい生活」
の一助になっています。

　NHK会長が人気が落ちかけている番組を気にしていろいろな発言や介入を
しているようです。そうして、よい番組でも打ち切らせていることがけっこ
うあるように思われます。NHKの会長は時の政権が選んでいるようなもので、
あまり好ましい人物はいません。「国営」放送ではなく、「公共」放送であ
るならば、NHK経営委員会も、英国のBBCのように、政府や財界の影響をあま
り受けない「公共的な」性格のものに変えてもらいたいものです。
