「”立派な"指導者だった方々は今みなさん刑務所にいます！」
1950年6月末,オーストラリア国際問題研究所の招きに応じてオーストラリアに
行き,多くの大学で冷戦に関連する主題について各地で講演をした。・・・。
アリス・スプリング（注：オーストラリア大陸の真ん中にある都市）は農業
の中心地であり,主に羊の牧場主たちが住んでいた。私は立派な刑務所を見せ
られたが,そこの独房は居心地が良いと確信した。なぜ独房がそんなに快適に
作られているのかと理由を聞いたところ,次のような返事だった。「ああ,それ
は,いずれかの時期に指導的な市民だった人々が全ていま投獄されているから
です!」。
At the end of June, 1950, I went to Australia in response to an
invitation by the Australian Institute of International Affairs to
give lectures at various universities on subjects connected with the
Cold War. ...
It (Alice Springs) was a centre for agriculture and inhabited chiefly
by sheep owners. I was shown a fine gaol where I was assured that the
cells were comfortable. In reply to my query as to why, I was told:
'Oh, because all the leading citizens at one time or another are in
gaol.'

＜寸言＞
アリス・スプリングはオーストラリアのほぼ真ん中にあり、2001年時の国勢
調査によると人口はわずか28,000人です。1950年にラッセルが訪れた時はもっ
と人口が少ないと思われ、観光目的かと思ってしまいましたが、アリス・スプ
リングには、Charles Darwin University のアリス・スプリング・キャンパス
がありました！（アリス・スプリング空港もあります。）
まさしく逃亡が難しい辺境の地ですので、刑務所としてふさわしい土地です
が(?)、遊興に惑わされずに勉学に集中できる土地でもあるということでしょ
うか？
