 reached a culmination in Hegel - it became evident that "phenomena" 
have whatever reality we can know of, and that there is no need to 
assume a superior brand of reality belonging to what cannot be 
perceived.

　以下は牧野力氏による要旨訳（ただし少し字句を修正）に原文を追加したも
のです。

　幸福な人々がもつ最も一般的かつ明瞭な特徴として、何らかの対象への熱意
がある。・・・
　人生に対する熱意は幸福へ導く力であり、人生に対する熱意はその人に一層
利点を与え、自分が愛されているとの感は何よりも熱意を促進させる。・・・
　本物の熱意は、－ 忘却を求めるようなものではないものであれば（嫌なこと
を忘れるための熱狂でないかぎり） －、人間生来の資質の一部である。幼児
は見聞きする全てに興味を感じる。幼児にとって世界は驚きに満ちており、物
事になじむことで身につく知識を常に熱心に探求する。外界への自然な興味を
邪魔されない限り、人生は楽しい。・・・
　文明社会では、学校や労働によって自然で自由な興味が制限される。制限が
続くと、疲労と倦怠が生れる。文明社会は人間の自発的衝動に強い制限を加え
る。近代の経済組識が要求する高度に複雑な協力の形式が、自発的衝動が生み
出す社会的協力の形式とは異なるからである。熱意に対する様々な制限や障害
を乗り越えるためには、まず健康と精力とによって興味の見出せる仕事を見つ
け出すことであろう。・・・

universal and distinctive mark of happy men, namely zest. ...
In all these different situations the man who has the zest for life 
has the advantage over the man who has none. Even unpleasant 
experiences have their uses to him. ...
Genuine zest, not the sort that is really a search for oblivion, is 
part of the natural make-up of human beings except in so far as it has
 been destroyed by unfortunate circumstances. Young children are 
interested in everything that they see and hear; the world is full of
 surprises to them, and they are perpetually engaged with ardour in 
the pursuit of knowledge, not, of course, of scholastic knowledge, but
 of the sort that consists in acquiring familiarity with the objects 
that attract their attention. ... Loss of zest in civilised society is
 very largely due to the restrictions upon liberty which are essential
 to our way of life.....
At every moment of life the civilised man is hedged about by r
estrictions of impulse: if he happens to feel cheerful he must not 
sing or dance in the street, while if he happens to feel sad he must 
not sit on the pavement and weep, for fear of obstructing pedestrian 
traffic. In youth his liberty is restricted at school, in adult life 
it is restricted throughout his working hours. All this makes zest 
more difficult to retain, for the continual restraint tends to 
produce weariness and boredom. Nevertheless, a civilised society is
 impossible  without a very considerable degree of restraint upon 
spontaneous impulse, since spontaneous impulse will only produce the 
simplest forms of social cooperation, not those highly complex forms
 which modern economic organisation demands. In order to rise above 
these obstacles to zest a man needs health and superabundant energy, 
or else, if he has that good fortune, work that he finds interesting
 on its own account. Health, so far as statistics can show, has been 
steadily improving in all civilised countries during the last hundred 
years, but energy is more difficult to measure, and I am doubtful 
whether physical vigour in moments of health is as great as it was
 formerly.)

　「多様性を理解しない者が多様性を説く矛盾」

　各個人が当然持つべき程度の個人的創意と柔軟性を保持すべきだとしたら,
個人は皆一つの厳格な鋳型におし込まれてはならない。即ち,別の喩えでいえ
ば,人間は全て一つの軍隊をなすように訓練されてはならない。多様性は,単一
の福音を全ての人間が受けとることを排除するにもかかわらず,必要不可欠の
ものである。しかしこのような教え（人間の多様性の重要性）を説くことは,
困難な時代にはとりわけ骨の折れることである。しかも,ある種の苦い教訓が
悲劇的な経験から学びとられるまで,多分実際の効果を持ち得ないことだろう。

And if individuals are to retain that measure of initiative and 
flexibility which they ought to have, they must not be all forced 
into one rigid mould; or, to change the metaphor, all drilled into
 one army. Diversity is essential in spite of the fact that it 
precludes universal acceptance of a single gospel. But to preach such
 a doctrine is difficult especially in arduous times. And perhaps it
cannot be effective until some bitter lessons have been learned by
 tragic experience.

＜寸言＞
　多様性を理解していない、あるいは体現していない者が多様性を説く矛盾。
スピーチのなかでオリンピックの精神を引用してみても、それが単なる掛詞で
あり、リップサービスであれば興ざめです。
　権力や権限を持っている、多様性とはほど遠い人達が、オリンピックの実施
に関わる重要な責任者（ディレクター、公式作曲家、その他）を選んだ結果、
競技が始まる前に、次から次へと、それらの責任者の適格性に疑問符がつけら
れています。
　やはりラッセルが言うように、「多様性の重視を言ってみても・・・ある種
の苦い教訓を悲劇的な経験から学びとるまで,多分実際の効果を持ち得ない」
ということになりそうです。そうして、「多様性に対する反面教師のオンパレ
ード」によって多様性の重要性が再認識されたことが「東京オリンピックのレ
ガシー」になるかも知れません。
