　下記は牧野力氏による「要旨」訳（注：ただし、少し字句を修正）に原文を
追加したものです。


　ニューヨークでタクシーの運転手から話しかけられた。「旦那はバートラン
ド・ラッセルさんでしょう。」
　彼は、昔、知識欲に燃えていた頃（知的であった昔）、私の講演を聞いた由
で、「今では女房もらって、唯の人になっちゃいましたよ（個性をもった人間
であることをやめてしまいました）」と付け加えた。これは、結婚の一つの痛
ましい結果のように思えた。
　人格の完成であるべき結婚の結果が、なぜ全く裏目にでたのか？（正反対に
感じられるのか？）・・・。
　彼は多くの人々の結婚についての考えを代弁している。その理由には、経済
的な面と社会的風習の面とがある。前者より後者のほうが改めやすい。
　夫婦はが余暇を共に過ごすのは当然という慣習は感心できない。・・・。相
手への心遣いや遠慮から自分の楽しみを控えるようになる。夫婦間に新鮮な話
題が乏しくなり、倦怠感を生みやすい。夫婦間にはある程度の社会的距離が必
要である。

(A few days ago in a taxi in New York, the driver turned around (to
the risk of our lives) and said:
'Excuse me, are you Bertrand Russell?'...
He then went on to say that in former days he had heard me lecture,
but that belonged to his intellectual past. 'Now,' he continued,
 'I am a married man and have ceased to be a person.'
There was no suggestion that his marriage was unhappy; it was to
marriage as such that he attributed this dire result. I never myself
experienced any such result of being married, but I know that the taxi
 driver was putting into words what a great many people feel.
The reason lies partly in economics, partly in social custom.
The latter, as being easier to set right, I will consider first.
The convention that husbands and wives should spend their leisure
hours together is a bad one. No doubt my taxi driver's wife does not
care for lectures and also does not like him to go to them without her.
 Many husbands and many wives will forgo their own pleasures out of
jealousy of the pleasures that they imagine their partners as desiring.
It is much more harmful to object to other people's pleasures than it
 is to be a trifle selfish in pursuing one's own, and a certain amount
 of social separateness of husband and wife is necessary if they are
not to become dull and incapable of finding anything to say to each
other.)

　「ノーベル賞の受賞」

　1950年末,ノーベル賞を受けとるためにストックフォルムに呼ばれた時, い
くらか驚いたことに,文学賞であり,私の著書『結婚と性道徳』(1929年)に対す
るものであったが,不安であった。なぜかというと,ちょうど300年前の冬,デカ
ルトがクリスティナ女王に招かれてスカンジナヴィアヘ行って風邪をひいて死
んだことを思い出したからである。・・・私と一緒にノーベル賞を受賞した他
の２，３人が,私の記念講演を注意深く傾聴し重要性なしとしない（重要であ
る）と考えてくれたことがわかった。その後私は,ノーベル賞受賞講演を私の
著作『道徳と政治における人間社会』（1954）の第二部に収録して出版した。
またその蓄音機用レコード（グラモフォン）がアメリカで作られ,有り難いこ
とに,私の想像以上に多くの人々に影響を与えたとのことであった。

When I was called to Stockholm, at the end of 1950, to receive the
Nobel Prize - somewhat to my surprise, for literature, for my book
Marriage and Morals - I was apprehensive, since I remembered that,
exactly three hundred years earlier, Descartes had been called to
Scandinavia by Queen Christina in the winter time and had died of the
 cold.... I found that two or three fellow Nobel prize-winners
listened to what I had to say and considered it not without
importance. Since then I have published it in Part II of my book
 Human Society in Ethics and Politics and a gramophone record has been
 made of it in America. I have heard that it has affected many people
 more than I had thought which is gratifying.

　今回もお休みです。

　編集後記　「明日は春分の日、緊急事態宣言解除、されど・・・」
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

　明日はもう（あるいはようやく？）春分の日ということで、冬物ともおさ
らばできそうな季節になりました。普通だったら、入学式、入社式など、新
しい門出を祝う気持ちになりますが、コロナ禍の現在、「浮かれてはめをは
ずしてはいけない、４人以上の会食はさけよう」といった訴えかけが連呼さ
れており、気が晴れない日々が当分の間、続きそうです。（「４人以上の会
食はダメ」という表現は、４人もダメというのが普通の解釈ですが、それを
自覚している少数のマスコミは「会食は４人まで」という表現を使っていま
す。）

　菅総理は、国会での質疑で、リバウンド対策の「５本の柱」をしっかりや
ればリバンウンドは防げるはずだと明言しています。どうもそれは無理そう
な気がしますがどうでしょうか？　

　明日緊急事態宣言が解除された後の一番の関心事項は、５月頃にまたリバ
ウンドが起き再び緊急事態宣言をせざるをえない状況に菅政権が追い込まれ
るかどうかということになりそうです。なぜならそれは、オリンピックの開
催にも影響するだけでなく、菅政権の支持率にも大きく影響し、対策に失敗
すれば、９月末の自民党総裁の任期に向けて、自民党内部で「菅おろし」が
はじまりそうだからです。

　いや、そんなことはたいしたことではないかも知れません。首都圏直下型
地震や南海トラフ大地震はいつ起こってもおかしくないと言われ、富士山の
大噴火の可能性も否定できない（現在は、日本列島の激動期）ということで
すから・・・。

　備えあれば憂いなし、と言いたいところですが、そう思っても十分備えを
していないのですから、我ながらいい加減です。　（松下彰良）
