　「命題関数」の概念に関するラムジーの新しい解釈が妥当であるかどうか
(validity)について、自分の考えをはっきりせせることは大変難しい、と私は
思っている（感じている）。私は、諸存在（entities）を命題に全く恣意的に
対応（相関）させることでは不十分だ、と感ずる。たとえば「fxは x のあら
ゆる値に対して真である」から fa にいたる推論をとって見よう。fx なる概
念についてのラムジーの説明からは、fa がなんでありうるかを我々は語るこ
とはできない。反対に（逆に）、我々は が何を意味するかを知る前に、fa、
'fb、fc 等々について、全宇宙を通して、知らなければならない。かくして
（thus　このようにして，従って）一般命題の主張は、個々の事例の全てを枚
挙することによってのみ述べることができることから、一般命題はその存在理
由を失う（ことになる）。（しかし）こういう反論にもかかわらず（Whatever
 may be thought of）、ラムジーの提案は、あきらかに独創的なものであり
（certainly ingenious）、諸困難を完全な解決ではないにしても、多分正し
い方向であろう。ラムジー自身もいろいろな疑問を抱いていた。彼はこう言っ
た。「ホワイトヘッドとラッセルの見解について私が試みた再構築は、困難
（問題）の多くを克服すると私は考えているが、それを全く満足すべきものだ
と考えることは不可能である。」（『数学的論理学』p.81）

I find it very difficult to make up my mind as to the validity of 
Ramsey's new interpretation of the concept 'propositional function'.
 I feel that a correlation of entities to propositions which is wholly
 arbitrary is unsatisfactory. Take, for example, the inference from 
'fx is true for all values of x' to 'fa'. With Ramsey's explanation of
 the concept fx we cannot tell what fa may be. On the contrary, before
 we can know what 'fx' means, we have to know 'fa' and 'fb' and 'fc' 
and so on, throughout the whole universe. General propositions thus 
lose their raison d'etre since what they assert can only be set forth
 by enumeration of all the separate cases. Whatever may be thought of 
this objection, Ramsey’s suggestion is certainly ingenious, and, if
 not a complete solution of the difficulties, is probably on the right
 lines. Ramsey himself had doubts. He said, 'Although my attempted 
reconstruction of the view of Whitehead and Russell overcomes, I think,
 many of the difficulties, it is impossible to regard it as altogether
 satisfactory' (Mathematical Logic, page 81 ).

　建設と破壊は共に力への意志を満足させる。建設に一層困難が多いと、達成
の満足感も大きい。破壊はずっとやさしいから、子供の遊びは破壊から始まり
、後の段階で初めて建設に移る。
　大人が作る積木の塔を先ず子供は叩きつぶしたがる。自分で塔を高く積み上
げると自慢し、弟や妹が叩くのを防ぐ。叩くのと積み上げるのとは、どちらも
子供を楽しませる衝動で、段階差はあるが、全く同じ質のものである。ただ、
新しい技能が同一衝動の活動に変化を与えたに過ぎない。（以上、要旨訳にな
っています。）

Construction and destruction alike satisfy the will to power, but 
construction is more difficult as a rule, and therefore gives more 
satisfaction to the person who can achieve it. ... Destruction being
 easier, a child's games usually begin with it, and only pass on to 
construction at a later stage. ...
When a child first has bricks, it likes to destroy towers built by 
its elders. But when it has learnt to build for itself, it becomes 
inordinately proud of its performances, and cannot bear to see its 
architectural efforts reduced to a heap of ruins. The impulse which 
makes the child enjoy the game is exactly the same at both stages,
 but new skill has changed the activity resulting from the impulse.

　多くの道徳的性質を獲得する第一歩は、'建設の喜びを味わうこと'から始ま
る。自分で作ったものをこわさないでとたのむ心情に、「他人の作った物をこ
わすな」、という理解の契機がある。

The first beginnings of many virtues arise out of experiencing the 
joys of construction. When a child begs you to leave his constructions
 undestroyed, you can easily make him understand that he must not 
destroy other people's. In this way you can create respect for the 
produce of labour, the only socially innocuous source of private 
property. 

　労働が生み出したものへの尊敬、忍耐心、観察への刺激などが子供に与えら
れる。子供と遊ぶ大人は、ただ、子供の野心を刺激し、どうすれば達成できる
のかを示唆すればよい。もっと進んだ建設的な教育は、子供が庭で遊ぶ頃に行
われよう。子供の最初の衝動は花壇の美しい花を摘み取ることに現れる。叱責
・禁止は容易だが、教育として適切ではない。三歳になれば、庭の一隅を子供
に与え、種子を蒔かせる。発芽と開花は不思議で貴重な現象として映る。そし
て、初めて蒔いた種子の花を大事にすることを悟る。

In this way you can create respect for the produce of labour, the only
 socially innocuous source of private property. ... If a child has 
access to a garden, it is easy to cultivate a more elaborate form of
 constructiveness. The first impulse of a child in a garden is to pick
 every attractive flower. It is easy to check this by prohibition, but
 mere prohibition is inadequate as an education. ... By the time a 
child is three years old, he can be given a corner of the garden and
 encouraged to plant seeds in it. When they come up and blossom, his
 own flowers seem precious and wonderful ; then he can appreciate that
 his mother's flowers also must be treated with care.

　最所フミ(編著)『日英語表現辞典』(ちくま学芸文庫，2004年1月)を参考に
した「ラッセルの英語_日英語表現辞典シリーズ」(通称 Ｒ日英表現)です。

★ trouble (p.247)

　この語には colloquial な（ = 口語の、俗語の）使い方があり、馴れない
人には的確に意味をつかむのが難しい。「悩ます」とか、あるいは何となく
「厄介なこと」という意味に受け取って、たいていは曖昧に解釈してしまう。
* He got her into trouble.（これは「面倒を起こした」というようなぼんや
りとしたことではなく、「男が結婚もしないで彼女を妊娠させた」という意味
である。）

　"get into trouble [with]"は、辞書には「問題を起こす」とか「処罰され
る」としか書かれていないが、「相手と喧嘩する」ことを意味している。また
、"troubled mind"と言えば、"disturbed mind"と同じで、「発狂した」とい
う意味。
　Ｒ英単語・熟語集の用例とはできるだけ重複しないようにしますが、用例が
少ない場合はどうしても重複してしまいます。あしからず。


Ａ．ラッセルの著作における用例

* 「妊娠」や「喧嘩」の意味の用例が見つからないので、一般的な意味の用例
を以下あげておきます。

 considerable trouble with him, but at any rate my mother understood
 him, as he was in character and appearance a Stanley.
[両親は,二人が交わした手紙（に書いてあること）から判断すると,彼（注：

　長い間、初代 Galaxy Note のスマホを使ってきましたが、スマホに関して
はネット契約はしないで、もっぱらパソコン（デスクトップ及びノートブッ
ク）と兼用で、モバイルルータ（Wimax2+）を介してWebを閲覧してきました。
しかし古いスマホなのであまりにも非力で、反応速度が遅いため、スマホによ
るネットの活用はほとんどしてきませんでした（できませんでした）。

　しかし、Google Analytics によると、ラッセルのホームページの閲覧者の
内、スマホによるものは、数年前は30%くらいだったものが、今では約60%近く
にまでに増えてしまっており、スマホの買い替えは喫緊の課題でした。

　性能のよいスマホは10万円前後もしてしまうため5万円以下で高級スマホと
同じくらいのもは発売されないものかと待ち望んできましたが、日本製はかな
り高額なものでもCPUが中国製などと比べ非力で、これまでメモリも4GBくらい
しかつんでいませんでした。

　そのような状況のなか、昨年末 中国の Oppo が4万円以下なのに高性能CPU
を採用するとともにメモリも６GB（記憶容量は64GB）をつんでいる Oppo Reno
A を発売しました（CMには指原莉乃を採用／製品名が Reono なので莉乃を採
用したらしい。）

　そこで、３日前にアマゾンで購入・入手し、一昨日 NTTドコモショップで
　SIMカードを再発行してもらい、使用し始めました。使ってみて、スマホの
進化に驚いています。パソコンと連携させないといけないので、リンクケーブ
ルも購入しておきましたので、デスクトップPCやノートブックPCとのデータ
のやりとりをすれば、電脳ライフはさらに一段グレードアップするものと期待
