In the modern world, those whom we effectively hate are distant groups, especially foreign nations. We conceive them abstractly, and deceive ourselves into the belief that acts which are really embodiments of hatred are done from love of justice or some such lofty motive.

現代においては世界中の出来事がテレビ放送やネットで伝えられており、過去の時代の人々とは桁違いの知識や情報を私たちは持っています。しかし、そこには危険が潜んでいます。
たとえば、外国の人々の知識を豊富に持っていても、一緒に生活することによって得られるような深い理解とは異なります。そうであるにもかかわらず、自分が好まない国民に侮辱的な言葉を投げかけたり、インターネット上で憎しみを表現したりする人が少なくありません。
そういった自分が行う小さなヘイト行為は大きな問題にはならないだろうと思うかもしれませんが、多くの人がそう思って同様な行為を行えば、想定外の対立や混乱を引き起こす可能性があります。

In the modern world, events from all over the globe are broadcast on television and shared on the internet, and we possess knowledge and information that far surpasses what people in past eras had. However, there is danger lurking in this.
For example, even though we may have extensive knowledge about foreign peoples, it is not the same as the deep understanding that comes from living alongside them. Yet, despite this, there are many who hurl insulting words at people from nations they dislike or express hatred online.
You may think that such small acts of hate that you engage in won't lead to any major problems, but if many others think the same and engage in similar actions, it can lead to unexpected conflicts and chaos.
The words of Bertrand Russell shared today were written nearly a hundred years ago, but isn't it time, in today's world, to re-evaluate his words?
