1939/1940学年度(1939.9～1940.6)の終わり頃,ニューヨーク市立大学教授になるよう招聘された。この事は既に決定されているように思われた。そこで,私はカリフォルニア大学の学長宛に辞職届けを書いて提出した。学長が私の手紙を受け取って３０分後に,ニューヨーク市立大学教授に私が任命されるということはまだ決定されたものでないということがわかった。そこで私は,辞表の撤回を学長に頼んだ。しかし彼はもう遅すぎると言った。熱心なクリスチャンの納税者たちが,自分たちが納めた税金を不信心者の給料にあててはいけないといって抗議している時だったので,学長は私（という厄介者）から逃れられるのを喜んだ。（出典： ラッセル「自伝」）Towards the end of the academic year 1939-1940, I was invited to become a professor at the College of the City of New York. The matter appeared to be settled, and I wrote to the President of the University of California to resign my post there. Half an hour after he received my letter, I learned that the appointment in New York was not definitive and I called upon the President to withdraw my resignation, but he told me it was too late. Earnest Christian taxpayers had been protesting against having to contribute to the salary of an infidel, and the President was glad to be quit of me.
