　私達が善いと思うことや好むことと、自然哲学の問いである何であるか（事実）とは全く関係がない。... 自然の哲学は不当に地上的なものであってはならない。自然の哲学にとって、地球は天の川銀河の小さな星（太陽）の一つの小さな惑星の一つに過ぎない。この取るに足らない惑星のちっぽけな寄生主が喜ぶような結果を引き出すために、自然哲学を歪めることは馬鹿げている。

What we think good, what we should like, has no bearing whatever upon what is, which is the question for the philosophy of nature. ... The philosophy of nature must not be unduly terrestrial; for it, the earth is merely one of the smaller planets of one of the smaller stars of the Milky Way. It would be ridiculous to warp the philosophy of nature in order to bring out results that are pleasing to the tiny parasites of this insignificant planet.
