リベラルな（自由主義的な）考え方の本質は、どのような意見を持つかではなく、どのように持つかにある。即ち、独断的に意見を持つのではなく、新しい証拠によっていつでも捨てられるかもしれないという意識を持って、暫定的に持つのである。これは、科学における意見の持ち方であり、神学における意見の持ち方とは対照的（反対）である。
The essence of the Liberal outlook lies not in what opinions are held, but in how they are held: instead of being held dogmatically, they are held tentatively, and with a con sciousness that new evidence may at any moment lead to their abandonment. This is the way in which opinions are held in science, as opposed to the way in which they are held in theology.
