以下は牧野力氏による要旨訳（ただし、牧野訳はかなり荒っぽいものでしたので、かなり字句を修正）に英文（原文）を添付したものです。
イデオロギー（注：特定の社会集団や社会階級によって抱かれている世界観）に関する限り、現代のいろいろな揉め事（troubles）は、狂信の度合いの増加の中に現れている(show themselves)。 もちろん、過去には、 今日では比較的に自田になっている事柄を任信した時代もあった。 今から振り返ってみると、比較的狂信主義を免れていた時期にもいくらか狂信主義が存在していた（注：牧野訳では「過去には、今日では比較的に自由になっている事柄を狂信した時代もあった」と誤訳している）。
フランス市民革命の時にも狂信主義が存在したが、狂信主義が支配していたのは約２年間だけであった。ドイツのナポレオンに対する抵抗においても狂信主義が存在していたが、それは1815年以降は徐々に消えていったと思われる。アメリカの南北戦争やロシアの革命派と皇帝派との衝突においても（いずれも）双方に狂信主義が存在していた。しかし ロシア以外の国においては、狂信主義者はロシアほど決して永続きはしなかったと思われる。
1914年以来、戦争によって引き起こされた苦難の結果、いろいろな種類の狂主義が政府を支配し、賢明な政治的手腕（sensible statesmanship）を不可能にしている 第一次大戦後の数年間、反ドイツ的狂信主義が存在していた。この反ドイツに応えるドイツの狂信主義は、ナチスの勝利へと導いた。（また）反ユダヤの狂信主義が存在し、不可避的に、それに応えるシオニズム主義者の狂信主義も生れた。
全ての狂信主義のなかで、最も重要なものは、共産主義者と反共産主義者の狂信主義が存在したし、現在も存在している。人類がそういった気分のままでいる限り、、世界政府の創設に必要な種類の協力は明らかに論外（out of question）である。
( So far as ideologies are concerned, the troubles of our time show themselves in an increase of fanaticism. There was, of course, some fanaticism in the period which now seems in retrospect to have been comparatively free from it. There was fanaticism in the French Revolution, but it was in control for only about two years. There was fanaticism in the German resistance to Napoleon, but it seemed to die down after 1815. There was fanaticism on both sides in the American Civil War and in the struggle between Russian revolutionaries and the Tsardom. But except in Russia the fanatics never seemed to gain control for any length of time.
Since 1914 - largely, I think, as a result of sufferings caused by war - we have seen fanaticisms of various kinds controlling Governments and making sensible statesmanship impossible. There was anti-German fanaticism in the years after the First World War; there was answering German fanaticism, leading to the victory of the Nazis. There was anti-Semitic fanaticism, with the inevitable response of Zionist fanaticism. Most important of all, there was, and is, Communist and anti-Communist fanaticism. While mankind remains in the temper, the sort of co-operation required for the inauguration of world Government is clearly out of the question. )
