他人のもっているものから苦痛を引き出す

Of all^*1 the characteristics^*2 of ordinary human nature envy is the most unfortunate; not only does the envious^*3 person wish to inflict^*4 misfortune and do so^*5 whenever he can with impunity,^*6 but^*7 he is also himself rendered^*8 unhappy by envy. Instead of^*9 deriving pleasure from what he has, he derives^*10 pain from what others have. If he can, he deprives^*11 others of their advantages, which to him is as desirable as it would be to secure^*12 the same advantages himself. If this passion is allowed to^*13 run riot^*14 it becomes fatal to^*15 all excellence,^*16 and even to the most useful exercise^*17 of exceptional skill. (From: The Conquest of Happiness, 1930)

not only does the envious person wish ... 副詞の not only が先に出たので,主語,述語動詞の順序が逆になって does … となっている。which to him is as desirable as it would be to secure the same advantages himself はちょっと考える必要がある。which の先行詞を前の advantages とすると述語が is だから合わない。そうするとこの which は前文の内容を指すことになる。つまり,to deprive others of their advantages ということになる。it would be の it は次の to secure の不定詞を代表する。be の次に desirable を入れて見る。ここのところは,他人からその優越したところを奪うのだが、そのことは自分でそういう優越さを獲得すると同じほどに望ましいことなのだ,という文意である。人の長所をなくして見たって、自分にその長所が来るわけでもないのに、まるで自分に長所が来たような気がするのが,あさましいことなのである。even to the most useful ... はもちろん fatal even to ... と続く構文。

　普通の人間の性質のすべての特徴の中で,羨望の心は一番不幸なものである。他人を羨やむ人は他人に不幸を与えることを願い・出来るならいつでも,自分は何の罰もうけずにそれをしたいと願うのだが,そればかりでなく,自分自身もまた羨望のために不幸になるのだ。自分の持っているものに楽しみを見出さないで,他人の持っているものから苦痛をひき出して来るのだ。彼は出来ることなら他人からその利点を奪うのだが,他人の利点を奪うことがこういう人間にとっては自分でその同じ利点を手に入れるのと同じほど望ましいことなのである。もしこういう感情が野放図にはびこるにまかせられたならば,それはすべての優秀なものを滅ぼすようになり,非凡な技術を最も有益に発揮することさえ不可能にさせてしまうであろう。 (右イラスト：Bertrand Russell's The Good Citizen's Alphabet, 1953状より)
