　この二人(レーニンとトロツキー)と対照的なのはゴーリキーで、私はペトログラードで短時間インタビューをした。彼はベッドに寝ていて、どうやら重病のようで、明らかに意気消沈していた。彼は、私がロシアについて何か発言する時にはロシアがどんな苦しみを受けてきたかを常に強調してほしいと、懇願した。... 彼は私が会ったロシア人全ての中で最も愛すべき存在であり、私にとって最も共感できる存在であった。私は彼の考えをもっと知りたいと思ったが、彼はうまく話せず、ひどい咳の発作で絶えず中断されたので、私はそこにとどまることができなかった。

An extraordinary contrast to both these men (enin and Trotsky) was Gorky, with whom I had a brief interview in Petrograd. He was in bed, apparently very ill and obviously heart-broken. He begged me, in anything I might say about Russia, always to emphasize what Russia has suffered. ... I felt him the most lovable, and to me the most sympathetic, of all the Russians I saw. I wished for more knowledge of his outlook, but he spoke with difficulty and was constantly interrupted by terrible fits of coughing, so that I could not stay.
