The Spartans thought that homosexuality promoted courage in battle. The actions which they condemned were such as, in their opinion, would have certain effects, and we agree with them in thinking that such effects are to be avoided if possible.

いかなる時代にも ー 後の時代の人が、どうして当時こんなことが信じられていたのだろうと思うような ー その時代の「思い込み」があります。多くの人が抱く意見と自分の意見が同じであれば安心できますが、そうでなければ 居心地が悪くなります。（もちろん、少数意見であることで得意がる人もいます。）
なお、最後の一文は、「もしそのような結果が本当に起こるのであれば」という言葉を補わないと、正しく理解できません。即ち、
「 彼らが非難した行為は、彼らの意見ではある結果（効果）を与えるものであり、（もしそのような結果が本当に起こるのであれば）私達はそのような行動の結果はできれば避けるべきであるという考えで彼らに同意するだろう。」
