行動よりも思想/思考（自分の頭で考えること）に喜びを見い出す習慣は、無知や過剰な権力愛に抗する安全装置（セーフガード）であり、不幸の中で平静を保ち、心配事（不安）の中で心の平和を保つ手段である。 個人的なことに限定された生活は、遅かれ早かれ、耐え難い苦痛になる可能性がある。 人生のより悲劇的な部分が耐えられるものになるのは、（人生よりも）より大きくて、より騒がしくない宇宙への窓によってのみである。
A habit of finding pleasure in thought rather than in action is a safeguard against unwisdom and excessive love of power, a means of preserving serenity in misfortune and peace of mind among worries. A life confined to what is personal is likely, sooner or later, to become unbearably painful; it is only by windows into a larger and less fretful cosmos that the more tragic parts of life become endurable.

＜寸言＞
In Praise of Idleness, 1935（邦訳書：角川文庫版『怠惰への讃歌』）に収録されている"Useless Knowledge"の一節から採取したものです。（初出は、"Social Importance of Culture"というタイトルで、1933年に The Sunday Referee, 8 Oct. 1933 に発表されています。）
1933年というと、ヨーロッパを揺るがした第一次世界大戦終結から15年経過していますが、1929年には世界大恐慌が起こっており、まだその影響が残っていました。
1933年１月にはヒトラーがドイツの首相となり、アインシュタインを始めとしたユダヤ系の知識人は自由を求めてアメリカに亡命しました。
一方、日本においては、同年３月末に（日本の）国際連盟脱退の通告をし、東京商科大学（現在の一橋大学）の大塚金之助や京都大学元教授の河上肇が検挙されました。
そのような時代背景を考えれば、この『怠惰への讃歌』でラッセルが序文に書いた次の言葉は理解・共感できるのではないでしょうか？
「この本はいろいろな政治思想がぶつかりあう場合にはとかく無視されがちな社会問題に関するエッセイを収録している。即ち、この本は、思想の領域での過度の組織化や、行動における過剰な骨折りによって起こるいろいろな危険を強調している。・・・。また、この本は、知識は直接に実利があるからばかりでなく、広く物を思索する心的習慣を促進するゆえに重要であると主張している。・・・。」（This book contains essays on such aspects of social questions as tend to be ignored in the clash of politics. It emphasises the dangers of too much organization in the realm of thought and too much strenuousness in action. ... It maintains that the importance of knowledge consists not only in its direct practical utility but also in the fact that it promotes a widely contemplative habit of mind. ...)
