Collective excitement, involving indifference to pain and even to death, is historically not uncommon. ... こういった現象が様々なレベルで起こります。敵と味方とを峻別し、味方側が大きく傷ついても敵側が自分達よりもっと傷つけば、「自分達は勝利したのだ！」と自らを慰めることができるようです。
国民はたまったものではないですが、直接的な被害を被らない権力者は「冷静に」甘受する（忍び難きを忍ぶ）ことができます。
