"whereas" と "while"の意味・ニュアンスの違い（バートランド・ラッセル英単語・熟語　比較004）

　"while" はよく使われますが、"whereas"はそれほどお目にかかりません。
　両者の違いは、"while"（「と同時に」「・・・する間に」「・・・である一方」）が「並列」であるのに対し、"ｗhereas"（「～に対して」「しかるに」）は「相反」（相反する２つのことを比較）であるということにあります。
　ただし、"while"のラッセルの用例２は "whereas"の意味に近いようにも思えます。しかし、これは、たまたま反対のように見えても、意識としては「並列」的に述べているだけと考えたほうがよさそうです。（なお、法律用語として文頭で使われる場合には（「～なので」「～といった背景があるから」と）少しニュアンスが異なってきます。）
　"whereas"の語源は、"where" + "as"が組み合わさったのではないかと想像されますが、やはりそのようです。"where"には次の例文のように、「～であるのに対し」という逆説の意味があり、"as"（同様に）がくっついて、"whereas"（～であるのに対し＋同様に）が「～に対して」「しかるに」という意味になっていったと推測されます。
