The Greeks invented a whole lot of hypotheses which turned out valuable later, but which in their day couldn't be tested. Take, for example, the atomic hypothesis. Democritus invented the atomic hypothesis that matter consists of little atoms, and after two thousand years and rather more than that, it turned out that this was the right scientific view, but in his day it was merely a suggestion.
